The St. Stephen's College Overview

St. Stephen's College is a religious foundation based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. It focuses on helping its members achieve spiritual and intellectual and moral and aesthetic values.

Founded on February 1, 1881, St. Stephen's is the oldest university in Delhi. He was first affiliated with the University of Calcutta, then at the University of Punjab. Finally, the creation of the University of Delhi in 1922, was one of the three constituent colleges.

The college started with only five students and three teachers in a small house katra Khushal Rai, near Kinara Bazaar Chandni Chowk. From 1891 to 1941 was housed in the building now hosted by Delhi College of Engineering, near St. James Church in the Kashmir Gate. In 1941 he moved to its current location at the University enclave. The current buildings of the college, with the exception of some later additions were designed by renowned architect Walter George.

The College was founded by a Christian mission from Westcott House, Cambridge. Rev. Samuel Scott Allnutt was the founder and first director. The anniversary of his death is celebrated Founder's Day on 7 December each year.

The College has a membership to the whole of India and of all faiths, are students and teachers from all communities and all regions of India. There are also teachers and students. It is expected that nearly 250 men and 108 women to attend college.

The College offers many facilities for the development of a personality. He has a beautiful library with more than eighty thousand pounds. The College of playgrounds for outdoor games are located outside the ancient walls of the city between the Kashmir Gate and Mori Gate while facilities for tennis, basketball and football at the College campus. The Francis Monk Gymnasium, the Junior Chamber and the Ladies Common Room provide facilities for gymnastics, badminton, squash, table tennis and other indoor games.

The College has a chapel which is open to all members of the Order for worship and meditation. Instruction of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ is given to students of the first Christians.

Societies and student clubs play a vital role in the life of the College. For each topic, there is a company that sponsors extra-curricular courses and discussion, and generally try to stimulate interest in the subject. There are many other academic and cultural societies and clubs covering a wide range of activities such as debates, drama, mountaineering, film and music appreciation, social services, photography, electronics and astronomy.

The College has a number of scholarships each year to students for high achievement in academic and extra-curricular activities. Scholarships and other financial aid to deserving students based on need-cum-merit.
