Anna University Overview

Anna University was established on 4 September 1978, University of type unit. It offers higher education in engineering, technology and science related to the current situation and anticipated needs of the society. Besides promoting research and dissemination of knowledge, it promotes cooperation between academic and industrial communities University was created by bringing together and integrating two well-known technical institutions in the city of Madras.

* Institute of Technology Madras, Chrompet (MIT) (1949) and three technical departments of the University of Madras.
* Alagappa College of Technology (ACT) (1944)
* School of Architecture and Planning (SAP) (1957)

Located in the southern city of Madras (Chennai), the University main campus extends over 100 hectares abutting the Adyar River in the north and Raj Bhavan on the south shore. Institute of Technology Madras Chrompet is the second campus of the University, which covers 20 hectares. Both campuses have a variety of buildings to accommodate the different needs of the university community. A third campus extends over 80 hectares is located near the Instronics Taramani campus, Adyar. The Bioprocess Laboratory donated by SPICE is currently on campus and a number of centers of excellence, such as the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Sugar Research Institute, Mechatronics Institute, Entreprenuership Development Park, and Convention Center will also be housed there in future.

Since December 2001, grew up in a big and very famous university affiliated, having among its members some 225 self-financing engineering colleges of six colleges and three government supported by the Government engineering colleges in different parts of Tamil Nadu State.


The Anna University, of the type is a member of the Association of Indian Universities, the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the business partner of UNESCO International Center for Engineering Education (UICEE). UGC has accredited the Anna University Five Star State in 2002, with the highest rating. With proven capabilities in academia and research, Anna University was able to receive this award for five years for excellence in technical education.
