Bethune College Kolkata Overview |Admission Notifications

Bethune College, the first school to play a historic role in the cause of women education in Bengal, which began as a woman and the Hindu flourished in the school Bethune School on 7 May 1849. The founding father, John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune, a graduate of Trinity College Cambridge and the Fourth Wrangler, arrived in India in April 1848 that the law of the Governor-General of the Council. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Education. In his pioneering efforts to promote women's education, he received the support of some enlightened Indian Tarkalankar as Pandit Madan Mohan, Ram Gopal Ghosh, Raja Dakshina Ranjan Mukherjee. The Bethune School has started its operations in years, two daughters of his role in a plot of land donated by Raja Dakshina Ranjan Mukherjee at Mirzapur in Calcutta. Bethune died on 12 August 1851 and Lord Dalhousie, Governor General of India for his work. The school now moved to a new building in West Cornwallis Square, where the foundation was laid on 6 November 1850. The progress of this school received a boost to the integration of the Banga Mahila Vidyalaya, another of the women of Calcutta school. The college started functioning in 1879 with a call for tenders, Kadambini Bose. In 1883, she was a fellow Chandramukhi Basu, a native Christian girl Dehradun. In 1883, the two Kadambini and Chandramukhi jurisdiction over the degree research at the University of Calcutta. 1887-88 by the Ministry of Bethune College School has undergone a radical change, as the deployment of its students now eleven girls, one in the class of MA. In February 1888, Bethune College received affiliation to the University of Calcutta to the BA standard Chandramukhi Basu already completed his MA with honors in English, was its first director.





In the first fifty glorious years of college, the number of students has increased steadily and the college has had its share of excellence in universities and extra-curricular activities. In 1914-15, the student has risen to 72, the highest ever allowed, since the beginning of college. At the beginning of the next ten years (1925-26) had reached 151. In the next ten years, this number rose to 260. Political interference by the movement of civil disobedience, the movement in August and, more importantly, the Great War, was temporarily dampened the spirit of this school. But its role was taken over in 1949 swelling. In combination with the increased number of students has been a steady increase in the course taught at the School.





Kamini Sen illustrious teachers, the remarkable poet Krishna Chandra Bhattacharya, famous philosophers like Chintaharan Chakraborty and Bhattacharya Gopinath, and renowned scientist and scholar Sushobhan Chandra Sarkar served the College at different times. From the beginning, Bethune College a mark in the production of students.





Between 1890 and 1931, Bethune College delivered two thousand two recipients of the Padmavati Gold Medal awarded by the University to the candidate at the top of BA examination. Sm Sarala Ghosal later Sarala Chaudhurani debtors was the first in this room. In 1938, Quazi Akhtar Banu, later supplemented Akhtar Imam examinations BA in philosophy and won the gold medal Gang Amani debtors. In 1940, a comparative analysis of results from different colleges in Calcutta in second place only the Presidency College Bethune College, which has enjoyed a unique place of distinction. Several Muslim students of Bethune College, from 1925 with remarkable success Faziltunnessa. Faziltunnessa Zoha later became head of the department of mathematics and vice-president of the College. For a couple, SM Kamini Roy, SM. Chaudhurani Sarala Devi, Sita Devi SM, Santa Devi, Sm Lila Roy, and Dr Dipti Tripathi - have all contributed to the repertoire of the literature and Bengali culture. Affiliated with the University of Calcutta, Bethune College, in its 128th year, 16 departments and a faculty of resistance 69. The college with a glorious past can now rely on the preservation of rare documents and valuable data in the new composition Archive. In addition, the College has a library housing and recent titles of publications and a section of rare books.

  • A candidate may apply for a maximum of three Honours subjects. Separate application must be submitted for each Honours subject.
  • Bethune College does not offer B.A./B.Sc.General Course.

  • Candidates who have passed 10+2 exam in 2008 or 2009 only are eligible to apply.
