In the history of education in India, the results of City College not only remembered for his pioneering efforts in the field of modern education in the country but for the fact that he is the embodiment of the liberal spirit of the master minds who have enriched the nineteenth century, the renaissance of India.



The City College of today has its humble beginnings in the town that the school was founded in January 6.1879 by Sadharan Brahmo Samaj. Late Ananda Mohan Bose, the then President of the Samaj had borne the costs of the founding of the school, which was repaid within a short period. Late Sivanath Sastri was the secretary and the organizer and other prominent members of the Association participated actively in the creation of the School. Late Surendra Nath Banerjee is one of the teachers at that time because he was a friend of Ananda Mohan Bose Sivanath Sastri are in the Indian, the first attempt to land of freedom of the Great Britain.



In 1881, two years after its founding, the city, the school was elevated to a college where the classes have begun FA. Since then, the class moves quickly towards the development of higher education. BA classes were opened in 1884 and within five years after its founding, the institution has become a first year class. In 1885, an Act of the Ministry of Education to the BL-standard was added. The College was established in an old house. After a short period of time, this house of 13, rue Mirzapur (now Surya Sen Street) was purchased for the City College.



Then, a new building was erected in the square at a cost of lakh rupees. The foundation of the building was laid by the end of Sri Ramesh Chandra Mitra, Kt. BL, then Chief Justice of officiating High Court of Calcutta and the opening ceremony of the new building was completed in 1884 by Lord Ripon, the Governor General of India. For a number of years teaching at the MA has been done with the standard City College. But the master classes have been removed when the new regulations of the University of Calcutta in force. In January 1905, the College was placed under the supervision of a company registered under Act XXI of 1860 and the name of "The City College institution, now known as the Brahmo Samaj Education Society. The aim is to "promote the cause of education - understanding of the mind, heart and body and on the basis of a theist, to seek the welfare of mankind and glory of God. "



To meet the growing needs of students over a new building was built in 1917 to Amherst Street now, Raja Rammohan Sarani, Kolkata on a plot of three and six bighas cottahs.
