The origins of the Order is so far back in 1817, when Maharaja Tej Chand founded an Anglo-vernacular school in the premises of his palace in Burdwan. It was expanded and renamed "High School by Maharaja Mahatab Chand in 1854. Despite the revival of Bengal slowly transforming the social fabric, Burdwan remains quite indifferent to higher education to English Aftab Chand was the Maharaja of Burdwan 1881. In the same year he was transferred to the school and liberal arts courses Natunganj introduced in accordance with the consent of the University of Calcutta and the new unit called Maharaja's College. The school was eventually named " Raj Collegiate School and the College 'Burdwan Raj College.

Since then, the progress of the conference was remarkable and sustained. Among the main events of the story, talking about May be a result of the transfer to Aftab House in 1941. Aftab House, in north-west of the picturesque Shyamsayar at a distance of about one kilometer from the station Burdwan. The campus of 13 hectares and measures is almost next to the University of Burdwan.

The Royal Patronage of Burdwan Raj College was acquired by the Government of West Bengal in 1956 under the sponsorship and, finally, the necessary separation from the University of Calcutta force. Ultimately, Burdwan Raj College affiliated with the University of Burdwan in 1960.


Burdwan Raj College (founded 1881) is one of the largest and oldest universities, not only in the Burdwan district but also throughout the state of West Bengal. The picturesque campus of 13 hectares is located in the center of the city, near railway station, and the Medical College Hospital and the University of Burdwan. The serene beauty of Shyamsayar adds to the greatness of college. The name of the Order is so widespread that it needs no introduction. However, a glance at the portrait of the school is to encourage a kind of fond memories, as we have always at heart.

Burdwan Raj College profile

Burdwan Raj College was in 1881, and he wears a long association with the maharajas of Burdwan, namely Tej Chand, Chand Mahatab and Aftab Chand. The royal patronage was taken over by the Govt. West Bengal in 1956 under the scheme and the sponsor of the College is affiliated with the University of Burdwan in 1960. Growth and development of the school is quite remarkable. He runs three shifts - morning (only General - Arts and Commerce), Day (specializing in the arts and sciences) and evening (Commercial). 18 Hons. Courses are taught in more than B.B.A. (H) and B.C.A. (H). He is currently a constituent college of the University of Burdwan, for PG study in Bengali.
From the beginning Burdwan Raj College is recognized as an excellent school where learning goes hand in hand with the population of values that transform human beings, no society. It has a galaxy of eminent personalities in different fields of art, science, commerce, and not least, politics and administration. The long list of bright personality speaks a lot about the college, its goals and results. A matter of education to education is not our goal, education whose mission is to strengthen the human link in the broader perspective of the world is our attention. The College still feel the need for values that can unite people in a society torn by strife, disorder and disintegration. Therefore, the need to conduct on the part of students. Students admitted to the Burdwan Raj College to be aware of their responsibility to the College, other students and people from society in general. They must respect the dignity and legacy of 128 years. No need decorum will attract disciplinary action. Students must attend 75% of classes held.
