NIT Rourkela, The National Institute of Technology

National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (NIT), formerly known as Regional Engineering College (REC) is one of the world's largest national institutions for technical education in the country. and is financed by the Government of India. The Indian government has increased the Regional Engineering College, Rourkela at the university under the name of the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela.



The main purpose of the institute is to produce high quality engineers and scientists in the second degree and graduate in various branches of Engineering and Science. Institute headed by the Board of Directors National Institute of Technology (Rourkela) Society and equipped with a large administrative and financial autonomy. The Indian government has recognized the institute as a Premier Agency to develop the confidence and the center of excellence on the basis of the financing plan. The Institute is complemented by two foreign collaborative funding agencies, that the material is a Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering under the Indo-UK REC project and the Computer Science and Electronics streams under the World Bank, the Swiss Development Corporation cum IMPACT project.



The campus of the Institute, which consists of the Institute's buildings, halls of residence and staff colony is located in eastern end of Rourkela steel city, beyond Sector-1 over an area of 262 hectares of land by the Government of Orissa. It is a residential campus offering accommodation to faculty, staff and students. Campus has all the opportunities to develop personal, social and academic skills of the learner in the community.



Rourkela had to focus on the city in 1954-55, the decision, the Government of India to create the first public sector Steel Plant here in collaboration with the then West Germany. The city is a major metropolitan area to all parts of the country connected by rail and road. The population of the city is around 6 lakhs
